About Winston Baptiste
Winston Baptiste was an archivist for most of his working life — periodicals, ephemera, and the unglamorous business of establishing which of two undated documents came first — before turning that training on a game he had played socially since his twenties. He now works on the documentary history of poker: where the variants came from, how they travelled, and how the vocabulary accumulated one borrowed word at a time.
He is careful about a subject that attracts confident storytelling. A great deal of poker's popular history is repetition — an anecdote printed once in the nineteenth century, quoted through the twentieth, and now cited as fact by people who have never seen the original. Baptiste's habit is to say what the record actually supports, name the earliest source he can find, and mark the rest as tradition rather than evidence. Readers who want a tidy origin story will find him disappointing on purpose.
On this site he writes the historical and etymological material: the development of the ranking hierarchy, how draw gave way to stud and stud to community-card games, and the origins of terms whose literal meanings detached from their use generations ago. He is not a strategy writer and does not claim to be a strong player. His interest is in how the game got here, not in how to beat it.
